PREGNANCY AND DIABETES
Tuesday, 16 de June de 2020 - 12:06
One of the biggest fears of a pregnant woman is to develop Gestational Diabetes. In case of positive diagnosis, it is essential to change some habits to ensure that everything goes well.
The onset of Gestational Diabetes in the mother increases the risks to the baby's health: at the time of delivery and right after delivery, with the risk that the baby's blood sugar levels may decrease very quickly. The same goes for mothers who are more predisposed to develop the condition.
CONTROLLING THE VALUES
The diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes is made through specific blood tests: measurement of fasting blood glucose, right at the first prenatal surveillance appointment, and an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).
Confirming the diagnosis implies the adoption of a healthier lifestyle - altering diet and adjusting physical activity - as well as regular monitoring of your blood glucose values through self-control tests, with the supervision of your nurse and your doctor. If blood glucose levels do not return to normal, medication may be necessary.
In case of doubt, Nurse Holon is always available to accompany you!
